Offshore Precipitation Capability (OPC) System

The system’s capabilities will assist operations in coastal regions by extending weather analyses beyond the range of current radar, improving awareness of weather activity that threatens air transportation safety.

Developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and FAA weather experts, the Offshore Precipitation Capability (OPC) looks a lot like a standard radar product, but its reach goes far beyond conventional radar. The Offshore Precipitation Capability addresses the lack of airspace situational awareness for aircraft traversing oceanic sectors of the National Airspace System (NAS).
